Why Your Dog Needs a "Case" to Solve

We spend a lot of time teaching our dogs to look at us, but this month, we’re encouraging them to use their most powerful natural tool: their nose. Did you know that 15 minutes of intensive sniffing can be the mental equivalent to a longer walk? When we ask our dogs to "be a detective," we aren't just feeding them - we’re giving them a hit of dopamine, lowering their heart rate, and building confidence. It’s the ultimate "calm down" button for a high-energy dog. It's also great for puppies to learn how to problem solve and for senior dogs to help prevent cognitive decline.
The Mission for April: This month, we’re moving from "passive eating" (staring at a bowl) to "active problem solving."
Training Tip: The "Find It" Game
You don’t need fancy gear to start the investigation. Try this:
Put your dog in a "Stay" or "Place."
Hide a few high-value treats behind a chair leg, under a rolled-up towel, or even just in the grass.
Give them the release cue "Find it!" Watch them hunt and search for their prize. This builds a dog that is focused, having fun, and expending energy!
You can also use their dry kibble or a handful of small treats inside a food dispensing toy to help keep them busy and engaged with a toy instead.
